Aren’t smoothies amazing? I know I’m not exactly discovering the wheel by saying this, but I’m madly in love with the incredible variety of flavors, nutrients, and health benefits that you can pack in such a simple concept as “chop – add ice – blend.” A couple of weeks ago, during my many late-night internet escapades, I purchased an awesome little book called Healthy Smoothie Recipes. It contains over 30 different recipes, most of them “functional” and meant to be lower blood pressure, soothe your stomach, help you lose weight, etc. and the combinations it presents go from standard to wacky, but all worth a shot!
After all, the classic banana, strawberry, and milk does get old after a while, and there are many other options out there with less sugar or fewer calories. This morning I went for their Anti-aging smoothie, which combines two types of berries for the antioxidants, plus avocado for some skin-protecting vitamin E, and coconut milk for the zinc. As a plus, it contains a bit of turmeric, which gives it a funny color although the flavor blends well with everything else. I don’t suggest skipping it because turmeric has many different benefits for the skin, from extra zinc to niacin (which prevents dermatitis) and pyridoxine (which stimulates glowing skin and hair growth). The full smoothie goes like this:
- 7 ice cubes
- 1 cup coconut milk
- ½ cup blueberries
- ½ cup avocado, chopped in cubes
- ½ cup raspberries
- 1 cup pineapple
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
Simply blend everything on high until smooth! This smoothie only has 147 calories, but some of it is protein and healthy fats from the avocado, so it keeps you full all morning. Enjoy!
